The History of Pikes Wines

Pikes Wines, a renowned family-owned winery, is steeped in rich history that dates back to 1886 when Henry Pike emigrated from Dorset, England, to South Australia. Henry initially established a brewing business in the Adelaide Hills, which evolved over the years and set the foundation for the Pike family's deep-rooted connection to the beverage industry. Fast forward to 1984, Pikes Wines was officially founded in the picturesque Clare Valley by Henry’s descendants, Andrew and Neil Pike. The brothers combined their expertise in viticulture and winemaking to create a legacy of excellence in wine production, capitalizing on the unique terroir of the region.

The Vineyards

Pikes Wines owns and manages several vineyards across the Clare Valley, each selected for its unique attributes that contribute to the diversity and complexity of their wines. The vineyards are planted primarily with Riesling, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with other varietals that thrive in the region’s Mediterranean climate. The Clare Valley is renowned for its rich, red loam soils over limestone, which, combined with the valley’s varied topography and altitude, create an ideal environment for grape growing.

Sustainable farming practices are at the heart of Pikes’ vineyard management. The team employs methods that enhance soil health, conserve water, and promote biodiversity, ensuring the longevity and health of the vineyards. This commitment to sustainability not only preserves the natural beauty of the Clare Valley but also enhances the quality and purity of the wines.

Winemaker: Neil Pike

Neil Pike, a co-founder and chief winemaker, is the driving force behind Pikes Wines. With decades of experience and a profound understanding of the Clare Valley’s unique viticulture, Neil has meticulously honed his craft. His approach to winemaking emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and the terroir to shine through. Neil’s expertise and passion are evident in every bottle, consistently delivering wines that are true to their varietal character and the region’s distinct profile.
