Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2015: A Classic Expression of Elegance and Depth

Penfolds' St Henri Shiraz 2015 stands as a testament to the winery's dedication to traditional winemaking and distinctive style. Introduced in the early 1950s, with its first commercial vintage in 1957, St Henri offers a unique counterpoint to Penfolds' Grange, emphasizing the pure expression of Shiraz without reliance on new oak.

Origins and Winemaking

Sourced from esteemed South Australian regions—including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills—the 2015 vintage comprises 93% Shiraz and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. The growing season experienced lower than average rainfall, leading to reduced yields but exceptional fruit quality. In line with tradition, the wine matured for 12 months in large, seasoned oak vats over 50 years old, allowing the fruit's character to shine without significant oak influence.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the 2015 St Henri Shiraz presents a deep magenta hue. The nose reveals an enticing bouquet of dark cherries, plums, and blackberries, complemented by nuances of roasted meats, black olives, and a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, it offers a harmonious blend of ripe forest fruits—boysenberry, loganberry, and blackberry—supported by fine, polished tannins that impart a signature silkiness. Subtle notes of dark chocolate and mocha add depth, leading to a finish marked by vibrancy and balance.
