Winemaking and Drinking
The 2018 Shiraz is sourced from Tyrrell's own vineyards, primarily from the 4 Acres and Stevens blocks, which are renowned for their old vines and low yielding, high quality grapes. These vineyards benefit from well draining soils and a temperate climate, with cooling breezes that help to balance the heat of the summer, leading to a prolonged ripening period. This results in grapes with intense flavors and complexity.
Winemaking Process
The 2018 vintage was notable for its challenging growing season, marked by a hot summer and minimal rainfall. However, the expertise of Tyrrell’s winemaking team ensured that only the best grapes were selected. The fruit was handpicked and underwent a gentle crushing process. Fermentation took place in traditional open-top fermenters, and the wine was matured in a combination of new and old French oak barrels for 12 months. This careful aging process helped to integrate the wine's flavors and soften its tannins.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, the 2018 Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz reveals an enticing bouquet of dark berries, black cherries, and plums, complemented by hints of black pepper, spice, and subtle oak. The palate is rich and full bodied, with a harmonious balance between fruit and acidity. Flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate, and a touch of vanilla are prominent, supported by velvety tannins and a lingering, elegant finish. This Shiraz is approachable in its youth but has the potential to develop further complexity with age.
Awards and Recognition
The 2018 Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz has garnered significant acclaim both domestically and internationally. It received a Gold Medal at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards, praised for its depth and refined structure. Additionally, it was awarded a Silver Medal at the International Wine Challenge, further cementing its status as a standout wine from the Hunter Valley.
