The Lenswood Chardonnay 2019 is sourced from the Lenswood vineyard, an elevated site situated at approximately 500 meters above sea level. The vineyard, acquired by Shaw and Smith in 2012, benefits from a cool climate and varied topography, which contribute to the unique character of the wine. The site’s high altitude and the well-draining soils, predominantly composed of sandy loam over clay, are ideal for growing Chardonnay grapes, allowing for slow ripening and the development of complex flavors.

The 2019 vintage was marked by a relatively dry growing season, with cool nights and warm days, fostering a balanced acidity and vibrant fruit profile in the grapes. Handpicked at optimal ripeness, the Chardonnay grapes were meticulously sorted and whole-bunch pressed to preserve their purity. Fermentation took place in a combination of French oak barrels, 30% new, to add texture and depth while maintaining a bright, fresh character.

Winemaking 

The winemaking process for the Lenswood Chardonnay 2019 involved minimal intervention to let the vineyard’s distinctive qualities shine through. Wild yeast fermentation was employed, followed by maturation on lees for ten months. This approach enhanced the wine’s complexity and mouthfeel, resulting in a Chardonnay that is both elegant and richly layered.

The Shaw and Smith Lenswood Chardonnay 2019 has garnered significant acclaim both domestically and internationally. At home in Australia, it received high praise from respected wine critics and publications. James Halliday, a renowned Australian wine critic, awarded it 97 points, highlighting its pristine citrus and white peach flavors, balanced by a subtle oak influence and a long, mineral finish.

Internationally, the Lenswood Chardonnay 2019 has also impressed, earning a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. The judges commended its harmonious blend of fruit intensity, acidity, and complexity, noting its potential for further aging. Additionally, it has been featured in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines, showcasing its global recognition and appeal.
