Winemaking and Drinking
The Laughing Magpie Viognier Shiraz was first introduced in 2002, marking d'Arenberg’s foray into co fermented red and white blends inspired by the Rhône Valley. The name "Laughing Magpie" refers to the native Australian magpie, whose black and white plumage mirrors the contrast between the dark Shiraz and the pale Viognier.
Winemaking
The 2018 vintage of The Laughing Magpie follows d'Arenberg’s traditional winemaking approach. The grapes are basket pressed and fermented in small batches, with a significant portion of whole bunch fermentation adding structure and complexity. The Shiraz, which dominates the blend, provides depth and spice, while the Viognier, co-fermented with the Shiraz, enhances aromatics and texture. The wine undergoes extended maceration and is aged in a mix of seasoned and new French and American oak barrels, adding layers of vanilla and toasty spice.

Tasting Notes
On the nose, The Laughing Magpie 2018 exudes ripe blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, interwoven with lifted floral notes of apricot blossom and honeysuckle from the Viognier. The palate is rich and full bodied, with velvety tannins and balanced acidity. Dark fruit flavors are complemented by hints of pepper, licorice, and smoky oak, leading to a long, lingering finish with a touch of minerality.
Awards & Accolades
The Laughing Magpie has consistently earned high praise from critics and wine competitions. The 2018 vintage continues this legacy with strong scores from Australian and international reviewers. The wine’s bold character and aging potential make it a standout choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
