Winemaking and Drinking

Pikes 'Eastside Shiraz' 2018 hails from the Clare Valley, a prominent wine-producing region in South Australia renowned for its rich soils and unique microclimate. Established in 1984 by Andrew and Neil Pike, Pikes Wines is a family-owned and operated winery that has built a reputation for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Clare Valley.

Vineyard and Terroir

The 'Eastside' Shiraz is sourced from vineyards located on the eastern side of the Clare Valley, an area known for its slightly cooler climate and elevated altitude. This part of the valley benefits from a combination of red loam over limestone and slate soils, which contribute to the depth and complexity of the wines. The cooler temperatures and significant diurnal temperature variation help to preserve acidity while allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, leading to a balanced and nuanced wine.

Winemaking

The 2018 vintage benefited from a relatively dry growing season with consistent warm weather, ideal for Shiraz. Harvesting was done at optimal ripeness to ensure the perfect balance of sugar, acidity, and phenolic ripeness. The grapes were handpicked and then fermented in small batches to maintain control over the fermentation process and to extract the maximum amount of color and flavor compounds from the skins.

Post-fermentation, the wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 12-18 months. This aging process allowed the wine to develop its complexity and integrate the tannins, resulting in a smooth and well-structured Shiraz.

Tasting Notes

Pikes 'Eastside Shiraz' 2018 is a vibrant and expressive wine that showcases the hallmark characteristics of Clare Valley Shiraz. In the glass, it presents a deep, inky purple hue, indicative of its intensity and concentration.

  • Nose: The aromatic profile is rich and inviting, with pronounced notes of dark berries, such as blackberry and blackcurrant, interwoven with hints of plum. Complementing these primary aromas are subtle layers of spice, including black pepper, clove, and a touch of vanilla, derived from the oak aging process. There are also delicate floral hints of violet, adding to the complexity.

  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and robust, yet balanced. The dark fruit flavors carry through, accompanied by nuances of licorice and mocha. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, providing structure without overwhelming the fruit. A vibrant acidity keeps the wine lively and ensures a long, satisfying finish.

  • Finish: The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, spice, and a hint of smokiness.

Pikes 'Eastside Shiraz' 2018 is a testament to the quality and distinctiveness of Clare Valley wines. It embodies the dedication of the Pike family to producing wines that are not only reflective of their terroir but also of their meticulous craftsmanship.

This wine is a perfect representation of a modern Australian Shiraz, combining intensity with elegance, making it a worthy addition to any wine enthusiast's collection. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further development, Pikes 'Eastside Shiraz' 2018 promises a rewarding experience.
