Winemaking and Drinking
Origins
Shaw + Smith, established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, has earned a reputation for producing exceptional wines in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. The M3 Chardonnay, introduced in 2000, is named after the three family members involved in its creation: Michael, Martin, and Matthew (Michael's brother). The 2021 vintage continues this legacy, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that have become synonymous with Shaw + Smith.
The M3 Chardonnay 2021 is sourced from the company's estate vineyards, primarily located in Lenswood and Balhannah, areas known for their cool climate and unique terroir. These vineyards, sitting at elevations of 400-500 meters, provide ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay, with cool nights and moderate days that allow for slow ripening and the development of complex flavors.
In the winery, the grapes undergo whole-bunch pressing, a technique that enhances the wine's finesse and purity. Fermentation is carried out in a combination of French oak barrels (30% new) and stainless steel tanks, contributing to a balance of oak influence and fresh fruit character. The wine is then aged on lees for nine months, adding texture and depth.
Awards and Accolades
The Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay 2021 has garnered significant recognition both domestically and internationally. At home in Australia, it has received high praise from notable wine critics and publications. James Halliday's Wine Companion awarded it 96 points, praising its complexity and elegance. The wine also received accolades at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, winning the trophy for Best Chardonnay.
Internationally, the M3 Chardonnay 2021 has not gone unnoticed. Decanter Magazine awarded it a Gold Medal, highlighting its refined structure and vibrant acidity. The International Wine Challenge (IWC) also recognized the wine with a Silver Medal, noting its expressive citrus and stone fruit flavors, complemented by a well-integrated oak profile.
Vineyard
The Lenswood and Balhannah vineyards are the backbone of the M3 Chardonnay. Lenswood, with its steep slopes and well-drained soils, produces grapes with intense flavors and bright acidity. The Balhannah vineyard, on the other hand, is characterized by its slightly warmer microclimate and diverse soil types, contributing to the wine's complexity and richness.
Both vineyards are managed with sustainable practices, reflecting Shaw + Smith's commitment to environmental stewardship. The careful vineyard management ensures the health of the vines and the quality of the fruit, resulting in wines that truly express the unique character of the Adelaide Hills.
The Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay 2021 stands as a testament to the dedication and expertise of its creators. From its origins in the pristine vineyards of the Adelaide Hills to its recognition on the world stage, this wine embodies the pursuit of excellence that Shaw + Smith is renowned for.
